I have to admit…this one was a little disappointing for me. It’s always a shame when an otherwise amazing show has a sub-par final season, but that’s what happened with Community for me. And I mean, to be fair, the show went through a lot of hard times, so this sort of thing was bound to happen, and if anything I’m surprised the show didn’t go downhill sooner. There was plenty of behind-the-scenes fights, creator Dan Harmon was briefly kicked off the show, cast members started to leave, and to top it all off, NBC actually canceled the show after its fifth season, leaving Community to be picked up for one final season by a briefly existing Yahoo! streaming service.

Community really started to stretch its reason for existence in season 5 since the characters had now graduated college, but luckily season 5 was strong enough that I was able to look past it. Season 6, though, just starts to feel completely unnecessary. The show just feels like it’s sticking around because it’s obligated to (six seasons and a movie!), with nothing of real importance happening until the last few episodes, which I don’t want to spoil.

My biggest problem with season 6 of Community is simply that it no longer feels like Community. The show feels like it really lost its soul, and it’s a shame to see. There are multiple reasons why I feel this. One reason is that out of the seven main characters in the show, only four are still around for season 6. While my favorite characters are still there, the show just feels empty without the rest of them. The show tries to make up for this by adding two new main characters to this season, but they honestly just don’t fit in well with the show…at all. I found them to be painfully unfunny, and an unwelcome addition.

Aside from this, though, the show just completely changed its whole structure with season 6. For one thing, the episodes are way longer, for no real reason. Instead of the usual 20-22 minute length, they’re now about 30, and while this might not sound like a big deal, the result is that the episodes feel WAY too long, and wear out their welcome by the end. Also, the biggest crime here is that it just feels like your typical sitcom. One of the things that always really set Community apart from its contemporaries is that it had so many special and unique ideas for episodes, but here the episode plots feel so cliche and typical. The creativity is almost completely wiped out. This is the main thing that made the final season not feel like Community, but they even change many things like the music and cinematography. The show looks a lot darker here for some reason, and it’s really off-putting. I’m not sure why the showrunners decided to change the show so radically for its final season, but it just doesn’t work.

Luckily, what does ultimately work for the season is when it decides to retain the things that make Community so good. Make no mistake, the actors here are still as fun as ever, and so just being around these characters is usually enough to at least make it somewhat fun. While I had a problem with the overall feel of the show, I still liked seeing the existing characters interact with each other in fun ways, and so the show saves itself from being completely bad by keeping this camaraderie intact. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the series finale actually is really special. The show may have fumbled a bit towards the end of its run, but it does at least stick the landing really well.

I didn’t hate season 6 of Community or anything, I just felt so indifferent towards it in a way that I didn’t feel for the rest of the show. It was still really bittersweet to say goodbye to the show, but at the same time I think that it was time for it to end. I often times hear people say that season 4 is the worst season of the show, but for me it’s season 6. It does have its redeeming qualities, but ultimately it’s a season that doesn’t understand what made the show as special as it is, and so it just made for a final season that was a bit disappointing.
