Last year, Adam Sandler did some of his best acting ever in a movie called Uncut Gems. Many people thought he got snubbed for an Oscar nomination, and apparently Adam Sandler was so proud of his performance that he said he would just do shitty movies from here on out since he didn’t get nominated. I thought of this when watching Hubie Halloween, because this is a lot more like one of the old Adam Sandler movies that people have historically trashed him for.

In Hubie Halloween, Sandler plays a character named Hubie, who lives in Salem and is kind of the town punching bag. Still, Hubie feels a real sense of responsibility towards Salem, and so he always tries to protect it…especially on Halloween night. Well, this year, trouble is definitely afoot, as some of the townspeople begin to disappear. So, it’s up to the town dunce to save the day.

I’ll just say that I liked Hubie Halloween. It’s really funny that Adam Sandler did this movie fresh off the heels of Uncut Gems, because the guy can be a good actor when he wants to be, but he can also play a completely goofy character other times as well. Hubie Halloween is definitely an example of the latter, so I would definitely recommend going into this by not taking it too seriously. He’s doing a caricature here, much like he did in movies like You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

Some people love Adam Sandler for these types of roles, while others despise them. You likely know what camp you fall into, so I don’t really need to tell you whether or not this is going to be for you. If you’re a fan of Sandler’s more goofy roles, definitely give Hubie Halloween a shot. If you’re not, then you might want to stay away from this one. Personally, I thought this was a nice throwback for Adam Sandler, and even though I know Hubie Halloween is a dumb movie at its core, I still couldn’t help but like it.
