I was a big fan of season 1 of Lonely and Horny. Being a big fan of the show’s creators, Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld, I thought that this web series was a great demonstration of their comedic abilities, and that the premise of the show worked well enough to provide some funny situations. Season 2 is more of the same in a lot of respects, but for some reason it just didn’t work as well for me.

There’s a bit of a through-line of plot for season 2, but for the most part it’s still pretty episodic. At the end of season 1, Ruby found himself on Orion, the most elite dating app. Season 2 doesn’t really explore this in any fun or substantial way. Rather, it’s just another weapon in Ruby’s arsenal. I’d say the biggest semblance of a plot here is that Ruby’s friend Ivan is getting married, and so he and Josh are in the wedding. This whole scenario lends itself to some funny moments, such as getting to see how Ruby will mess up the bachelor party and giving a speech at the wedding. Ruby is also given somewhat of a love interest here, although it’s not really explicitly explored until the end of the season.

I think this is probably my biggest problem with season 2. I just found that there wasn’t much consistency with it. I’m fine with having a show be episodic, but even the individual episodes feel pretty episodic. A lot of times the story of them shifts into something different mid-episode, and so it winds up feeling more like a bunch of vignettes thrown together, rather than one whole cohesive show.

Don’t get me wrong, there is still a lot to like here. Some of the episodes are pretty creative, such as one that simultaneously shows how an evening is going for Ruby and Josh at different times. The show is creative at times, and it does have some pretty great moments. But with season 2, I only felt like I was getting great moments, where with season 1 I felt like I enjoyed the whole product. This season is 10 episodes (each being close to the 10 minute mark), so it is the same length as season 1 too. It’s fun at times and still kind of worth the watch if you have access to it (it’s only available on Collegehumor’s Dropout streaming service), but it just didn’t do it for me as much as season 1 did.
