Good Boys is a movie that’s a pretty easy for me to give you a solid recommendation for. All you have to do is look at the poster, and see “from the guys that brought you Superbad, Neighbors, and Sausage Party.” If you’ve seen any of the above movies, you’re going to know what kind of comedy to expect from Good Boys. And if you haven’t seen any of them…well, you really should, because they’re all great movies. My short and easy recommendation is that if you’re into this kind of comedy, then Good Boys is a solid movie. It doesn’t break any new ground or anything, and it’s nothing extremely special, but it’s a fun, solid, funny movie. Give it a shot if this is your kind of humor.

But I’ll describe it a bit more if there’s anyone that’s still on the fence about it. Of the other movies I mentioned earlier, the best reference point for Good Boys is Superbad. Good Boys is basically the “middle school version” of Superbad. It follows three best friends in sixth grade, and there isn’t much of a plot outside of “we need to get to this party, and now we’re going to wind up getting involved in crazy antics along the way.” It’s one of those simple premises where the group of friends is tested, both in their relationships with each other and in their own personal journeys, through the mishaps that they get involved in.

If you’re looking for something deeper than that, then for you I might suggest looking elsewhere. Don’t get me wrong, the movie does show a decent amount of depth at times, particularly in its portrayal of how childhood friendships tend to dissolve once kids get older and become different people. There is a really touching story to be found there, but this is only secondary to the primary goal of just making you laugh. And for what it’s worth, I did laugh quite a bit. It wasn’t a constant “my stomach hurts from laughing” kind of movie, but some of the jokes land pretty hard. Its comedy mostly relies on the crazy situations that the kids get involved in, and I’m fine with that. Don’t get me wrong, this movie isn’t nearly on the same level as something like Superbad, and I don’t even quite expect it to stick around in my memory in quite the same way that Neighbors or Sausage Party did, but I still had a pretty fun time with this, and I don’t regret seeing it. This is the perfect kind of movie to rent or catch on a streaming service, so if you ever get the opportunity to watch it then I recommend it.
