Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a breath of refreshing air ever since it first started airing in 2013. It has such an amazing cast that works well together and extremely funny jokes that just keep on coming. While I thought the first season was amazing, I thought season 2 was absolute perfection, with every episode being consistently funny. Luckily, I feel like season 3 has kept this momentum going, because I found myself loving every single episode yet again.
While story isn’t the most important thing in a comedy series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seems to like ending their seasons on cliffhangers (a trend that continues in this season as well). So, season 3 picks up where season 2 ended, with Captain Holt being demoted to doing menial work and a new captain coming in to take his place. Luckily Holt is still kept on the show, but the season starts off with some really funny storylines. Over the course of 23 episodes, the season covers a lot of ground, and while the show is mostly episodic in nature, there are overarching story beats that are covered throughout the season. One of the most notable things is that Jake and Amy’s relationship is still being kept alive. The relationship is handled really well and provides some great comedic moments. Also, I thought a story arc that they did at the end of the season was done really. The last few episodes involve the Nine-Nine trying to save one of their own from a really bad situation, and only a show like this could take such a serious situation and still make it hilarious.
When shows start getting into their third seasons and beyond, there usually isn’t a lot of new things to say about it in a review. Basically my job here is to talk about whether the show’s quality has been kept intact, improved, or declined, and I’m happy to say that it’s been kept intact (it can’t exactly improve since I thought season 2 was perfect). This is still a show I look forward to watching every week, and one that I crack up laughing at in every episode. I feel like momentum usually dies down for some shows a bit at this point, but I’m still just as excited to watch this show every week as I was the past two years, and I was extremely excited to hear that the show will be getting a fourth season. I feel like I always wonder what more the writers could possibly do with these characters, and yet every episode they manage to give 2 or 3 separate stories that are always completely hilarious. I hope Brooklyn Nine-Nine doesn’t die down from here, because right now the show is on an incredible streak.
